AMD64 + Firefox 1.5 = Headache

So apparently, the 64-bit AMD processors are beyond the horizon on Mozilla’s roadmap. They don’t even mention AMD64, much less provide any of their programs for it, and their source doesn’t compile in my Linux environment (and getting other peoples’ code to compile is sooo much fun). The problem with using “normal” 32-bit programs is that they require lots of other accompanying software libraries, and every one of my libraries is 64-bit, so it’s not guaranteed to play nice together..  pointer sizes or whatever… no worky. In the case of Firefox, every single time it tried to open a file window (to save or open a file), it would crash. With Thunderbird, it wouldn’t even pretend to start up. The solution? Create a sub-environment that uses all 32-bit libraries (64-bit processors run 32-bit programs and libraries just fine). This way, all the 32-bit kids can play in their own little sandbox, while the 64-bit kids get to play outside the sandbox. This and some other miracles of Linux and X11 make everything work nice. Now, where’s my Aleve?

I don’t understand a bit of that, but I know Aleve really works on headaches.
